How to Avoid Mistakes While Training Your Dog
Though most dog owners take a sincere effort to train their dogs properly, many of them underestimate the amount of time and effort needed to do that, which results in a number of avoidable mistakes.
While dogs are intelligent, it is not wise to compare them to humans as the differences are much greater than similarities between the two. The mental abilities of an average mature dog can be compared to that of a two year old human. Moreover, though dogs can process language quite well, they do not analyze or reason like humans.
Sometimes it might be very frustrating to see your dog ignore your repeated commands. But this might be due to the fact that they are not able to understand you and not because they are ignoring you. However, some dogs are just more stubborn and some are easily distracted or it’s just that they fail to link a present command with previous experience. There are many reasons for a dog’s behaviour.
So what you need most while training your dog is patience. You should prepare yourself to repeat a particular or all commands again and again for a prolonged period of time. Sometimes it might even take two years for some dogs to follow any command beyond the basics, consistently.
Though it might be tempting and easier to lash out and strike the dog to obedience, you will end up with a fearful and not a trusting dog. In that they are very much like humans who can readily follow someone whom they trust than whom they fear.
While humans follow those they fear only if they don’t have any other choice, dogs respond in a different manner. They might just decide to endure whatever punishment you met out, without making any effort to learn anything. So, forget about any kind of physical punishment as a means to train your dog. It is not effective at all.
Here are some methods that you should NOT follow to avoid mistakes while training your dog.
* Stop treating your dog as a ‘dog’ and start talking to them like you would to a friend.
* Believing that dogs have the ability to connect actions that happens across time and under different circumstances and that they can interpret and come to a same conclusion as a human would.
* Getting frustrated and taking the easy way out by resorting to physical punishment when they do not behave as you want them to.
If you follow these WRONG and useless methods you will definitely end up as the owner of a maladjusted and temperamental dog. On the other hand, if you want a loving and loyal pet, take steps to change your attitude before you attempt to change your dog’s behavior.
